Doesn't really belong in this category, but doesn't go anywhere else, either. This is a worldbuilding piece/ character design for a post-apocalyptic setting I started writing stories in a long while ago, which had some major issues and therefore may not ever get revisited. If it does, it'll be with major revisions and may not even be recognizable. But the Nomads were always my favorite part and they'll remain more or less the same.
No, her outfit doesn't look greatly coordinated, that's because it's made from whatever bigger chunks of fabric her group managed to find in the ruins of the cities. I had a range of stories for this setting that spanned the first 300 years after the apocalyptic event, so I could show the evolution of new societies (I am such a sociology nerd). The Nomads begin by wandering from city to city, scavenging the remains of human society. They acquire horses and some livestock they find running loose near the wreckage of farms, clothes from whatever fabric or undamaged t-shirts they can find, and so on. As groups begin to settle into place and build new societies, the Nomads become traders, acquiring newly produced goods from these other groups in exchange for whatever they need from the cities (which are dangerous, so few people want to go there) and eventually facilitating trade between communities.
This character is one of the first Nomads (tentatively named Liza), in "Benji's group" (Nomad groups are, practically enough, named for their leaders). She's got motorcycle gloves to help protect her hands while going through rubble, a poncho made by cutting a hole in a chunk of cloth for her head (back before her group gained sewing skills), and bloomers from an old pillowcase. The sandals come from trading with another group. The bandages are over scrapes from digging through rubble. It's fall, so she's still wearing her warm-weather clothes but will probably be switching to more practical long pants soon. The Nomads have a lot of leisure time, especially during long travel between cities, so they pass the time by decorating themselves. Permanent hair ornamentation, embroidery, and the sewing of objects to clothes are their favorite methods. Her clothing is mostly undecorated, so far. When I get time I'll color a picture I have of her winter clothes that has more extensive decorations.
Drawn ages ago, colored recently while procrastinating.
Unlike my actual fashion designs, you MAY NOT use this image or design for your own purposes, commercial or otherwise. This is only because it goes with a world I might actually use to write and sell novels some day so I want to keep it mine. Sorry.
I find talking to people about your story's issues, and just getting them to ask questions (like "what is her armor made out of" or "what does this story say about yourself") tends to really help...
That is a very cool concept--I like it a lot. And not just the character, but everything you wrote. And if you ever do get this published as a novel, I want to read it!
